Billingsgate Fish Night
Post date: 04-Jun-2012 14:26:37
19th June 2012
Billingsgate Fish Market, in the shadow of Canary Wharf, is the UK's largest inland fish market, supplying fish to most of the South East of England and beyond - our crabs even go to China. It sells around 25,000 tonnes of fish a year worth £200m pounds, and around 40% of that comes in from abroad.
It's quite an experience to visit, but if you'd like to see what it's like, there's an excellent documentary on the BBC i-player on this link, which is available to watch until the 14th June.
We'll be leaving the house at 5.30 am to get to Billingsgate to pick the freshest seafood for you!
The menu will vary depending what we can get on the day but here's a general idea of what we're thinking:
Filipino Ceviche made with coconut milk
Chee's Favourite Mussels - a dish I invented 20 years ago that's stood the test of time
*****
Spaghetti Alla Vongole (spaghetti with clams) - there IS a benefit to all those weekly trips I made to Italy for all those years! At least it's authentic...
Classic Cantonese Steamed Sea Bass
Thai Prawn and Noodle Salad
Mackerel aux "Legs" - Mackerel Fillets with a green bean and caper salad
Fish Molee - a mild fish curry my mother used to cook for me as a girl, from southern India, with coconut milk
Mograbiah Salad with Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Pomegranate
Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Bulghur Wheat
Steamed Rice
Samphire
****
Tiramisu
Rhubarb Crumble Cake
Cost will be £40 of which £35 will go direct to MSF
